A 10ft is not a budget 20ft. The units we sell are usually a longer container cut shorter, with a new wall across the cut and the shell refurbished afterwards. That labour, and a thinner pool of stock, is why the price often lands above a plain used 20ft. If the block can take 6.06m of external length plus a straight run for the truck, price the 20ft beside it. Buy the 10ft when the site is the limit: a side passage, a driveway that stops short, a courtyard, or a club gate that six metres would jam.
On our table the inside is 2.83m long, 2.35m wide and 2.39m high — about 16 cubic metres — through the same 2.34m by 2.28m door a standard 20ft uses. That suits a compact implement stood against the end wall, a cafe's dry goods and packaging, a club's kits and folded goals, or a one-bedroom move if you pack hard and leave the fragile pieces out. It will not take a car, and it will not take a racking run worth planning around. Shelving on one long wall is what makes the floor feel usable.
Shorter does not mean it turns up on a ute. The truck still has to line up and tip. What the length changes is the pad you can use: between a high-set house and the side fence, hard against a tank, at the back of a yard the 20ft would overhang. Where there is no straight line in, a crane truck can lift the 10ft over a fence if it can stand close and the air above the lift is clear. Photos of the street, the gate and the pad tell us which. Ask which grade the quoted unit is, then look at pictures of that unit rather than a catalogue shot. Cargo-worthy and new-grade 10ft boxes are sold wind and watertight. As-is boxes are not. On a cut-down unit the new end wall, and the floor beside it, are the parts worth a second look. Sit the corners up on blocks or pavers so the frame does not twist, and add a vent if the contents mind damp air. A box that will face the street for years is a question for the council or the body corporate — the council approval guide lists what to ask them.
