Mullumbimby is 2482. Byron Bay, Suffolk Park and the Arts and Industry Estate side of town are 2481. Brunswick Heads and Ocean Shores are 2483. Bangalow is 2479. Hinterland driveways are often steep, narrow and shared, with a creek crossing that a long truck will not forgive. A 10ft is frequently the size that can finish the trip a 20ft starts and then cannot turn.

The industrial estate is makers, builders and small manufacturers short of floor space, with yards that look wide until the truck has to swing. Coastal estates at Ocean Shores are newer and still tight. People fitting a studio should check council rules before they treat the box as a room. The size is settled from photos of the entrance before the day is booked.

Start with the driveway

Most of what makes a Byron hinterland block beautiful makes it awkward for a truck: a narrow sealed lane, a steep driveway under a rainforest canopy, a creek causeway, a gate set on a bend. Before choosing a container, walk the route a truck would take and note the tightest corner, the steepest pinch, the lowest branch and what the surface does in the wet. In Main Arm, Wilsons Creek, Federal and the hills behind Bangalow, that walk decides the size. A 10ft container or a 20ft on a tilt-tray will get to places a 40ft on a sidelifter never will. Where nothing can drive in, a crane truck can sometimes lift from the road. The measurements to check are on our delivery page, and the delivery is quoted with the container once we understand the access.

Studios, sheds and the council question

People here do more with containers than store things. Pottery and art studios, music rooms, farm-gate stalls, tool sheds for market gardens and bush-regeneration gear all start as a steel box. If you plan to line, insulate and work inside it, begin with a high cube — the extra 30cm of height is what makes a lined container comfortable — and preferably a new single-trip unit, which has clean floors and straight walls to build on.

Byron Shire has firm views on structures, and a container used as a studio or kept permanently on a rural block may need approval. We sell containers, not planning advice, so talk to Byron Shire Council before you plan a fit-out. For plain storage during a build, hire keeps it temporary.

Rain, more rain, and mould

This is one of the wettest parts of NSW, and damp gets into everything. A cargo-worthy container is sold wind and watertight, so rain is not the problem, but under dripping trees in constant humidity it will grow mould inside unless air moves through it. Fit vents high and low, keep it up on blocks, clear leaf litter off the roof so water does not pond, and use shelving so nothing sits against the walls. As-is grade is not sold as watertight and is the wrong choice here for anything except steel and tools that live outside anyway. On the Brunswick River flats and other low ground, remember that a container does not keep floodwater out.

Mullumbimby questions

Can you deliver a container to a steep hinterland block?

Sometimes. It comes down to the lane width, the gradient and surface of the driveway, overhead branches and whether the truck can turn around. Photos or a short video of the route in are the quickest way for us to tell you what is possible.

Does a container studio need approval in Byron Shire?

Quite possibly. Approval requirements depend on zoning, use and how long the container stays. Check with Byron Shire Council before buying for a conversion. We can give you the exact external dimensions for your enquiry.

How do I keep a container free of mould in the Byron hinterland?

Airflow. Vents high and low on opposite ends, blocks underneath, a clean roof, contents on shelving away from the walls and moisture absorbers for fabrics and paper. Avoid siting it under dense canopy if you have a choice.

Can a container be delivered to a yard in the Byron Arts and Industry Estate?

Usually, if the truck can get a straight run to the drop spot. Estate yards are often tight, so send photos and the yard measurements.

Do you deliver to Ocean Shores and Brunswick Heads?

Yes. Both are within our Byron Shire delivery area. Sandy ground and small blocks are the usual things to check, so send a photo of the driveway.

Can a truck deliver across a grassed driveway near Bangalow?

Only when the grass is dry and the ground underneath is firm. A loaded truck on wet grass will bog and rut the paddock. If the drive is long and grassed, a gravel run-in or a spell of dry weather before delivery makes the difference.

Can a steep Mullumbimby driveway take a 20ft?

Sometimes it cannot, and a 10ft is the size that still gets in. The size has to be right before the day is booked. Photos of the entrance settle it.
