Roma and Maranoa containers for stations a long way from town

Roma is a long run for stations that cannot duck back to a hardware shop. The container is photographed before delivery. Roma 4455 is quoted to the property.

Warrego runs west of Miles

Australia's largest cattle selling centre, with gas country either side of it. Containers head west on our Warrego runs for station storage, workshop gear and site offices that have to keep working a long way from the nearest hardware shop.

Maranoa postcodes and station roads

Roma is 4455. Along the highway, Yuleba is 4427 and Wallumbilla 4428. North, Injune is 4454. West, Mitchell is 4465. South-east, Surat is 4417. Town blocks in Roma are a simple placement compared with a station road that crosses grids, a dry creek and a black-soil stretch.

Stations use a 20ft or 40ft as the lockup the open shed is not: pumps, fencing, vet supplies, workshop spares. Gas-field sites around the same district want something they can have removed when the work moves. Swapping size after it arrives is an expensive second thought, so the length is settled before the truck is booked.

Storage when town is a long way off

On a Maranoa station, running out of something means hours on the road, so properties carry stock: lick and supplements, vet supplies, poly pipe and fittings, fencing materials, oils, filters and the spares for whatever machine is most likely to stop. Kept in an open shed, that is a standing invitation to rats, dust and theft. A used cargo-worthy container puts all of it behind steel and one lock. Most stations start with a 20ft; those storing pallets of lick or long lengths of pipe and steel are better off with a 40ft, which has a little over 12 metres of internal length.

Because freight is a bigger part of the total out here than it is near the coast, it pays to get the size right first time. Bringing a second container later costs another trip. If you are weighing up two 20s against one 40, ask us to price both.

The road in: grids, creek crossings and gates

Highway access to Roma is simple — the Warrego from the east and west, the Carnarvon north to Injune and south to Surat. The station road is where deliveries are won or lost. Tell us about the narrowest grid and gate (a truck wants about 3.5m clear), any dry creek crossings with steep approaches, and how the road holds up after rain. Red and black soils out here can both shut a track for days. At the drop spot the driver needs firm, roughly level ground and a straight run to tilt the container off. See our delivery page for the checklist. Delivery is quoted with the container and reflects the distance and the access; one phone call gets you the exact figure.

Gas fields and town

Roma is a gas town as well as a cattle town, and contractors working the fields around Wallumbilla and Injune take containers as site stores, usually on hire. In town it is trades, rural suppliers and households wanting a lockable shed without a slab. For anyone fitting out a site office or workshop, a high cube is the better starting point.

Heat and grade

Western summers are fierce, and an unshaded steel box gets very hot inside. Vent it, shade it if you can, and do not store anything heat-sensitive — some vet products and chemicals specify storage temperatures — without checking the label. For anything that has to stay dry, choose cargo-worthy, which is sold wind and watertight. As-is grade is not, and is best kept for fencing gear and steel.

Roma questions

Do you deliver containers to stations outside Roma?

Yes. Tell us the nearest town, the distance off the bitumen, the width of the narrowest gate or grid and how the road handles rain. Delivery is quoted with the container, so you get one total.

Is it better to buy or hire a container this far west?

For a station, buy. The need is permanent and the transport each way is a large part of any hire. Hire suits contractors and projects with a defined end date.

One 40ft or two 20ft containers?

A 40ft is cheaper per cubic metre and is one delivery. Two 20s give you separation — chemicals in one, feed in the other — and each can be placed by a tilt-tray in tighter spots. Ask us to quote both ways.

Do you deliver to Mitchell, Injune and Surat?

Yes. All three are within the area we quote for from Roma, along with Wallumbilla and Yuleba to the east.

Do you deliver containers to Injune and properties on the Carnarvon Highway?

Yes. Tell us the nearest town, the distance off the bitumen and the condition of the road in, and delivery is quoted with the container.

Is a container a good idea on a block near Bungil Creek?

It can be, as lockable storage sited on your highest firm ground. It keeps rain out from above but not floodwater, so do not rely on it to protect anything from a flood.

How do station orders west of Roma get a container?

By delivery quoted to the property. Mitchell 4465, Injune 4454 and Surat 4417 are the same arrangement. The station road decides whether the truck can finish the job.
