Kalgoorlie, Somerville, Lamington and West Kalgoorlie are 6430. Boulder is 6432. Coolgardie is 6429. Kambalda West and Kambalda East are 6442. Town blocks want a straightforward 20ft. Contractors and camps want something that can live on a site and come off hire or stay bought when the roster changes. Heat, dust and red dirt are a maintenance reality for any steel box left in the open.

Kalgoorlie, Boulder and the roads beyond

Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Coolgardie and Kambalda are one Goldfields delivery area. Stock for it is held for the town and the leases, and the quote is container and delivery together, to the site. The Goldfields Highway heads north towards Menzies and Leonora, and the Coolgardie–Esperance Highway runs south to Kambalda.

Mine roads, haul roads and station tracks beyond the bitumen are another matter — graded red dirt can be excellent in the dry and impassable after a heavy storm — so we will ask about the condition of the track and whether the approach is sealed.

Mine sites, camps and contractors

Gold and nickel drive the Goldfields. Mining contractors, drillers, exploration crews and camp operators use containers as tool stores, spares depots, core-tray storage, camp laundries and workshops. Businesses in the West Kalgoorlie industrial area and around Boulder take them as lockable yard storage. Most of this suits a used cargo-worthy 20ft or 40ft; a high cube gives extra headroom for shelving and racking.

Mine sites run strict access rules: inductions, radio procedures, escorts and booked arrival windows. Give us the site contact and the requirements when you ask for a price, and they go to the carrier before the truck is scheduled. Confirm who on the lease is signing off on the container's position, so it is set down in the right place first time.

Heat, dust and red dirt

Goldfields summers are hot, and a steel box in full sun gets very hot inside. A light colour, shade, vents at both ends and a gap under the floor all help. Red dust gets into everything, so keep door seals clean and check the locking gear often. Winter nights can be cold, so condensation still turns up when a cold night follows a mild day.

The ground is mostly hard laterite and clay that carries a truck well when dry. Storms can turn clay pans and low spots to slop quickly, so pick a position on higher ground with a firm approach. Sit the container on pads or sleepers under the corners to keep it level and dry underneath.

Prospectors and small operators working tenements across the Goldfields often need a secure, lockable store on a remote block for tools, detectors, pumps and camp gear. A container is far harder to break into than a tent or trailer, and it can sit on gravel with no slab.

Town blocks, hire and grade

In Kalgoorlie and Boulder, containers go to households, trades and small businesses: tools, stock, a renovation or a move. Suburbs like Somerville, Lamington, Piccadilly, Karlkurla and South Kalgoorlie have normal suburban access, while blocks on the fringe and around Broadwood are roomier. Workers on fixed-term rosters sometimes take a container on hire to hold gear between swings.

Grade matters for dust as much as for rain. Cargo-worthy containers are inspected and sold wind and watertight. As-is units are cheaper, are not sold watertight, and are fine for steel or gear that would sit outside anyway.

Older parts of Boulder and central Kalgoorlie have rear lanes behind the houses, and some drops are easier from the lane than from the street. Tell us which side has the better access.

Coolgardie, Kambalda and the Goldfields towns

Coolgardie sits on the highway just short of Kalgoorlie, and Kambalda lies to the south on the road to Esperance, beside Lake Lefroy. Both are mining towns with their own contractors, workshops and households, and both are quoted to the address with delivery included. Further out, Menzies and Leonora to the north and Norseman to the south are quoted the same way when you ask.

Town blocks and camps out here often have loose gravel or crushed-rock hardstand, which suits a container well. Make sure the pad is level and big enough for the truck to line up straight. On unfenced blocks, think about security: fit a lock box over the padlock so bolt cutters cannot get at it.

Buying versus hiring for a contract

Goldfields contracts come and go, and whether to buy or hire usually depends on how long the job runs and whether you will need the container again.
